Course Description

Enrollment is open to students in grades 9-12. 

This course covers methodologies for designing new, imagined and/or fantastic game projects. You will examine the storyworlds of well-known games to learn what makes them compelling and engaging. Learn about concepts important to game development like worldbuilding, storytelling, quest design, and character development. You will also learn about fundamental principles, strategies, and techniques that make for compelling gameplay. Through the project-based approach you will use words and images to make the worlds and stories in your imagination come to life! You’ll learn new design and storytelling skills that you’ll use to create a pitch for your own fabulous game.  The secrets you learn will give you a better appreciation for the games you play and you might even enjoy playing them more. The final day of this workshop will include an exhibition opportunity to show your work to family and friends.  

 

Learner Outcomes

  •  Students will be able to explain the important elements of what makes a game successful and fun to play. 

  • Students will be able to explain fundamental strategies, and techniques of game design and development and apply them in game prototypes. 

  • Students will practice explaining their project work to their peers and giving each other constructive feedback. 

  • Students will have the opportunity to show their work in a final exhibition.
